The title is an allusion to Shakespeare’s The Merchant of Venice. The central character demands the payment of one pound of flesh from those who are in debt to him. Since Ben helped seven people, seven pounds of debt are owed to him. Ben has a debt to repay for the seven lives he took and so the phrase is both metaphorical and literal since six of the debts are repaid with his actual "flesh".

  2. Star Says:

he gave seven POUNDS OF FLESH to the people whom he was trying to help….his kidney, heart, liver, etc. to help them out. That is what the title means.

  3. Walter G. Says:

He has to atone for the harm he caused 7 other people and so he owes each of them a pound of flesh in penance, hence the title, "Seven Pounds".

Cuz he helps seven ppl by givin seven pounds of flesh

The seven people Tim helps are Emily Posa to whom he gives his heart, Ezra Turner to whom he gives his eyes, his brother Ben Thomas to whom he gives part of his lung, Holly to whom he gives the right half of his liver, Connie to whom he gives his house, Nicholas to whom he donates bone marrow, and George to whom he donates a kidney in order to get off of dialysis.

Star’s answer is true, but I figured it had something to do with the seven deaths he caused, as well- a pound of flesh for every sin, or something. I’m not even sure that’s a saying, but I think that’s why it’s "Seven Pounds" instead of "lives," "gifts," etc.

Will Smith has really let himself go, and its just a documentary on how he loses his first seven pounds.
