You can't totally do it for free, but there are some things you can do inexpensively. Lesson wise, get a subscription to one of the golf publications(Golf Magazine, Golf Digest, Golf Tips, etc) or go to the library and check out books on golf, or go to a book store and purchase a book written by one of the legends of golf(Jack Nicklaus, Tiger Woods, Arnold Palmer, etc). As far as clubs, go to Walmart or Target and get a complete set of clubs. You don't have to get a name brand set since you're still in the beginner's stage. Practice at your local range using the tips you get from reading the magazines or books. Play at par 3 courses to begin with just to get the feel of swinging the club and hitting good shots. Graduate to regulation courses and have fun. Practice, Practice, Practice.
